Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen – Commander of the Navy

 

An alumnus of the Military College of Fortaleza (1978), Admiral Olsen joined the Brazilian Navy in 1979, having been declared Ensign on December 14, 1982, upon concluding the School Cycle of the Naval Academy.

Throughout his career, he commanded the Minesweeper “Atalaia” and the Submarine “Tapajó”. He was Executive Officer of the Submarine “Tamoio” and the Aircraft Carrier “São Paulo”. He served as a Parliamentary Advisor and represented Brazil at the Inter-American Defense Board (USA), in addition to having served as Chief of Staff of the Navy's General Directorate of Personnel (DGPM).

He holds the Submarine Improvement Course for Officers, the Staff Course for Senior Officers – Naval War College (EGN), the Post-graduate Course in Political Science at the University of Brasília (UnB), the “Advanced Course in Hemispheric Defense and Security” – Inter-American Defense College, an institution linked to the Organization of American States (OAS), in Washington D.C. (USA) and a Master’s in Hemispheric Defense and Security – University Del Salvador (ARG).

Admiral Olsen was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral on November 25, 2011. He occupied, as a General Officer, the following positions: Director of Navy Civilian Personnel; Commander of the Submarine Force; Chief of Staff of the Naval Operations Command; Director of Hydrography and Navigation; Director of Navy Civil Works; Director-General of Nuclear and Technological Development of the Navy and Commander of Naval Operations. He assumed the Command of the Navy on January 5, 2023.
