                  1. Introduction

As mentioned in Chapters 19 and 20, regions to the deep ocean and the ocean
the ocean is an interactive part of the floor, knowledge about the state of the
entire Earth system. The ocean is charac- ocean and its behavior is increasingly nec-
terized by its dynamic physical and bio- essary for society; the Blue Economy is per-
geochemical processes with variability at manently imposing the growth of its ac-
all scales of space and time. Ocean circu- tivities on the ocean, from the surface to
lation transports and mixes, on a global the bottom. Observing the ocean becomes
scale, heat and water masses with various crucial but challenges are imposed by the
chemical contents. Any natural or artificial size of the ocean and the myriad of pro-
material that pollutes oceanic regions can cesses that there occur in all scales. Since
degrade ecosystems and, consequently, re- the 1970s, ocean observation technology
duce the benefits of these ecosystems to and capabilities have strongly progressed,
society. Thus, ocean resources gathered in particular through international part-
through human activities are impacted by nerships. However, the Global Ocean Ob-
the variability of ocean circulation and its serving System (GOOS) (MOLTMAN et al.,
state. Activities at sea, such as transport, 2019), supported by this international ef-
fishing, tourism, and others, are also af- fort, still needs improvement. This chapter
fected by all oceanic processes, some of focuses on oceanic processes and scales
which can evolve into events with extreme that are observed and how these observa-
and dangerous conditions. Considering tions are used or could be used to support
from the shore, coastal areas and estuarine the Blue Economy in Brazil.
