About NPOTC
The Naval Peace Operations Training Center (NPOTC) prepares military personnel from the Brazilian Navy , other branches, police and military forces of friendly nations, as well as civilians from the staff of the Naval Force itself and other agencies and institutions, for peace operations. According to the instructions of the Navy’s Commander, the Naval Force should concentrate efforts to obtain greater visibility of activities related to Peace Operations, especially those of a naval character, and to consolidate the experiences acquired. In this sense, NPOTC has a very important role, as a depository and disseminator center of knowledge and experiences acquired in the scope of peace and humanitarian operations, contributing to the Operative Sector of the Brazilian Navy. In addition, it is the vector of organization and execution of events, of national and international scope, of the brazilian navy in the scope of peace and humanitarian operations, contributing to the thinking and formulation of doctrine for such operations.
History
The Naval Peace Operations Training Center (NPOTC) was created through Memorandum No. 4/2008, of the Marine Corps General Command , initially with the name of “ Peacekeeping Operations school of the Marine Corps” , in order to fill a gap geared towards the individual and collective preparation for the Peace Operations that would come next (MINUSTAH, in Haiti had started in 2004), allowing the Brazilian Navy to have a sector capable of preparing its own staff, as well as registering and disseminating the knowledge and experiences acquired through participation in Peace Operations; to organize courses, internships and events aimed at exchanging knowledge about such operations, and represent the Brazilian Navy, at home and abroad, in events linked to Peace Operations. With the participation of the Brazilian navy in the Maritime Task Force of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in 2011, aware of the peculiarities of naval peacekeeping missions and envisioning the increase in missions of this nature in the context of international peace and security actions, it reformulated the tasks of the School and its own name, renaming it as “Naval Peace Operations School”, so that it can meet the needs and the very vocation of the Force , in addition to, becoming a reference training center for military operations for the benefit of maritime security, in the strategic Brazilian environment. In 2019, with its growth of importance, became the “Naval Peace Operations Training Center” of the Brazilian Navy
Structure
The NPOTC is led by a Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel , and is composed of a permanent structure, made up of navy officers and NCO’s organized in two Divisions: a Maritime Operations Division and the Naval land operations division . It also counts, for the performance of its tasks, with an updated database of instructors, with recognized experience in peace and humanitarian missions, graduated in courses made in Brazil and abroad, belonging to other Navy’s Military Organizations, which are employed in the instructions and other activities related to Peace and Humanitarian Operations.
