United Nations Military Staff Offices Course
The UN's growing role in peacekeeping amid complex crises has led to a multi-dimensional approach, posing new challenges for military staff officers' performance at headquarters. Reports highlight inadequate pre-deployment training as a key issue. Given their critical role in connecting strategic, operational, and tactical levels, staff officers must be proficient to ensure effective mandate implementation. To address this, the DPKO and DFS developed
Specialized Training Material (STM) to harmonize training and establish baseline standards, complementing national training courses and enhancing pre-deployment preparation for UN missions.
The aim of this Specialised Training Material for Military Staff Officers is to support the pre-deployment training efforts of Troop Contributing Countries by providing UN DPKO/DFS training standards to ensure a common military
approach to work at Force and Sector levels in UN peacekeeping missions.
The United Nations office of Military Affairs seeks highly qualified military officers from UN Member States for service in our peace missions around the world, either as individual Staff Officer, as Military Observers, or as part of a
formed unit from an individual Tropp-Contributing Country. Staff Officers are also valued at UN Headquarters from where they support all aspects related to the deployment of troops on the ground.
