Since the approval of the Resolution 1325/2000 of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), which deals with the importance and of expansion of the role and contribution of women in United Nations fieldbased operations, and especially among military observers, civilian police, human rights and humanitarian personnel, the United Nations (UN) has been adopting several measures to encourage its Member States to expand women's participation. Recently, Resolution nº 2242/2015 set the goal of a significant increase in the number of women in Peacekeeping Operations by 2020. Additionally, in 2018, the challenge towards gender equality was reaffirmed by the UN Secretary-General, who launched the Strategy for Gender Parity of Uniformed Personnel. The new policy has set objective and realistic targets to be achieved by 2028. In light of the 2024 targets of 21% for UNMEMs and Staff Officers and 11% for contingent members, attention and efforts on increasing the number of women deployed in contingents will be required by all contributors.
The Courses were held since 2018 by the Brazilian Naval Peace Operations Training Centre (NPOTC) consisting of instructions covering the United Nations Core Pre-Deployment Training Materials (UN CPTM), which knowledge is mandatory for all individuals who are part of a United Nations Peace Operation; basic instructions on the fundamentals of Military Operations; and lectures on the topic “Women, Peace and Security”.
