Context and Purpose
The Naval War College (EGN), headquartered in the city of Rio de Janeiro, was created on February 25, 1914, and has been located at Avenida Pasteur, 480, since 1970. EGN is an institution of advanced military studies, whose purpose is to contribute to the training of Navy Officers to perform operational and administrative duties, prepare them for General Staff functions and improve them for the exercise of command, leadership, management and high-ranking positions in the Navy.
Therefore, EGN is the Navy's main higher education institution, operating at the Postgraduate level. Since 2014, with the creation of PPGEM, the Brazilian Navy has been offering a Stricto Sensu Postgraduate course to society.
The Postgraduate Program in Maritime Studies aims to prepare civilian and military personnel with an emphasis on the maritime field in order to contribute to the improvement of the training of specialized personnel and to promote research to expand academic maritime knowledge in areas of interest to naval power and defense.
The great advantage of this program is the multi and interdisciplinary aspect that brings together multiple disciplines, as has been presented in similar Maritime Studies programs in countries with a consolidated academic tradition such as the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
The aim is to train specialist doctors and masters capable of evaluating the various government and private sectors in defense matters with an emphasis on the maritime field, formulating naval defense policies and international relations, and acting in forums such as the UN, OAS and IMO, in addition to training science and technology managers and legal analysts in the area of the Law of the Sea.
