“Tamandaré” Class Frigates (FCT)

The acquisition of four frigates of the “Tamandaré” class (FCT) is part of one of the Strategic Programs of the Brazilian Navy (MB), its constructions will be managed by EMGEPRON and executed by the Sociedade de Specific Purpose Águas Azuis - SPE, composed by the companies: Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defense & Security and Atech.
The FCT Program aims to modernize the Naval Power Nucleus to guarantee the country's sovereignty and encourage the growth of the National Defense Industry. In addition, to increase the production of goods or provision of services effectively performed by Brazilian companies, by providing expressive Local Content rates for their ships, which will reach percentages in the order of 40%, with a control methodology developed by the National Bank for Social Economic Development (BNDES).
The “Tamandaré” class frigates will be versatile escorts and of high combat power, capable of countering multiple threats and destined to protect maritime traffic and deny the use of the sea, being able to carry out defense missions of the Brazilian coast. In addition, they will be employed in the patrol of Brazilian Jurisdictional Waters, with an emphasis on the inspection and protection of economic activities, mainly oil and fisheries. The construction of the first frigate is scheduled to start in 2021 and delivery between 2025 and 2028.
